A Start….
BRINGING HEALTHY FOOD TO THE NORTHSIDE
Wirth Cooperative Grocery is in the start-up phase of developing a food cooperative grocery store to bring healthy food to the Northside of Minneapolis.
Currently identified as a “food desert” residents have to travel long distances to get local, fresh healthy foods. Wirth Co-op has plans to meet the needs of its diverse community by carrying a variety of traditional, ethnic and natural foods. Plans include a deli, a possible delivery service and a mini-farmer’s market supporting locally grown foods.
The food co-op is a project of the Harrison Neighborhood Association who is providing support staff and resources. Plans call for the store to be located in the Harrison neighborhood. However, it plans to serve customers from the target area of Hwy 394 on the south, Hwy 94 on the east, Hwy 100 on the west and a “floating” northern border serving the Northside of Minneapolis.
Please watch this website for updates and information about the new store. Our Board of Directors is actively preparing a business plan, searching for supporting funds and resources with the hopes of opening a store sometime in 2012.
Stay tuned.
